Basralian, as Trustee of the Winifred M. and George P. Pitkin
Foundation, donates one million dollars to Bergen Community College,
the largest gift ever donated to BCC
Joseph L. Basralian, Managing Partner of the
Hackensack, New Jersey law firm of Winne, Banta, Hetherington,
Basralian & Kahn, P.C., and Trustee of the Winifred M. and
George P. Pitkin Foundation, donated the $1 million to Bergen
Community College to name the mega-structure the Pitkin Education
Center for the training of science and healthcare professionals. The
gift represents the largest donation ever given to Bergen Community
College. The award took place at Bergen Community College on
Wednesday, May 5, 2005, at a symposium entitled, "Health,
Science and Bergen Community College," at the Anna Maria
Ciccone Theatre. Ms. Frances Hoffman, also a Trustee of the Pitkin
Foundation and a former director of the medical labs and department
head at Columbia University, was a co-presenter of the gift.
In his remarks to the Symposium, Mr. Basralian noted that as a mecca
of educational opportunity in Bergen County, BCC allows many people
who otherwise might not be able to continue their education, the
chance to matriculate in college at a modest cost. He remarked
further, that beyond money, the success of BCC relies on the
commitment of individuals' contributions of time and effort. The
college, which was founded in 1965, has over 14,000 students, many
of whom contribute heavily to fulfilling the workforce requirements
of New Jersey and Bergen County businesses and healthcare
institutions. Mr. Basralian is the former past Chairman of the
Bergen Community College Foundation.
Mr. Basralian served as a Trustee of the American Heart Association,
Bergen District, and has been a member of the Board of Governors of
the Armenian Bar Association. Mr. Basralian was recently awarded the
Ellis Island Medal of Honor for his philanthropic contributions at a
ceremony that took place on Ellis Island on Saturday, May 14, 2005.
Mr. Basralian is the managing partner of his firm and practices in
the areas of real estate and land use, corporate and commercial law,
and banking services. A graduate of the National Law Center at
George Washington University and Fairleigh Dickinson University, he
is a member of the New Jersey Bar Association, including the Land
Use, Planning and Community Affairs Committee of the Legislative
Committee of the Banking Law Section, the Land Use Law Section, and
he is a member of the Municipal Law Committee of the Bergen County
Bar Association.
